About the Healthcare Industry
The healthcare sector in New Zealand is booming, employing 55,000 workers with about 8,000 vacancies. The demand for healthcare workers is driven by an ageing population, a shortage of nursing staff in hospitals, and an ageing workforce. In December 2023, Stats NZ reported a 5.3 percent annual increase in jobs in the healthcare and social assistance industry.
As the baby boomer generation moves into retirement, the number of people aged 65 and over has doubled since 1980 and is expected to double again by 2036. Currently, three-quarters of workers in aged care are over 45, with most between the ages of 55 and 64.
